25. Sött och gott. - Sweet and delicious

Allting tillverkades inte på gården. Ibland fick Maria lov att gå upp till byn för att t.ex. köpa sytråd i handelsboden. Då klädde hon upp sig i sin bästa stass:
Lång kjol, kort insvängd jacka, kängor, hatt och handväska.
Barnen tyckte, att hon var vacker, en nätt uppenbarelse med ädla drag, vackert formad rak näsa och hög panna.
Det var lite av fest. Barnen var förväntansfulla och det var de inte utan orsak. Varje gång hon kom hem, hade hon med sig en strut karameller.
Det fanns även andra sötsaker på gården. Sockertoppar i speciella skrin hade blivit populära. Man hackade av en bit med hjälp av en fastskruvad kniv, en hacka. Axel, fadern, gjorde som han förmodligen blivit lärd. Han snokade upp ett jordgetingbo, som han bände upp med hjälp av en lång stör. Sen fick han springandes ta hem det. Den insamlade nektarn var söt och go och pillades ut ur hålen.
Tandborstar fanns inte, så tandstatusen var inte bra. Många tandlösa fanns det och det hörde liksom till. De gamla såg väldigt gamla ut. Maria fick så småningom en lös uppsättning tänder, men de låg alltid i ett skåp, för bekväma var de inte.


SWEET AND DELICIOUS

Not everything was produced on the farm. Occasionally Maria needed to go up to the village to purchase sewing thread in the store. Then she dressed up in her finest; long skirt, short pleated jacket, boots, hat and purse. The children thought that she was lovely, a neat vision with noble features – a beautifully shaped straight nose and high forehead.
It was a bit of a celebration when she went to town. The children waited anxiously and not without reason. Each time she came home she had a bag of candies.
There were other sweet things on the farm. Sugar loaves in a special box had become popular. A bit was hacked off with a screw fastened knife, a chopper.
Axel, the father, did as he had been taught. He pried up a mud hornets nest which he tied up with a long string. Then he ran home with it. The honey inside was sweet and good when plucked out through a hole.
There were no toothbrushes, so dental care was not good. Many were toothless. The elderly especially appeared aged. Eventually Maria got a loose pair of dentures, but they were always kept in a cupboard for they were not comfortable to wear.
