Barndomshemmet var en enkel stuga. Man kan ännu ana konturerna av den, eftersom brodern, "Per bror", anlade en trädgård, där den första stugan byggdes på 1830-talet. Längs den forna grunden, planterade han vinbärs- och krusbärsbuskar. Gavelsidan mot Boggån, med det äldre namnet Gåsvarvsån, markerades med en apel och ett körsbärsträd och mellan dessa fylldes en halvcirkelformad rabatt med gullvivor och pärlhyasinter, sorter som ännu finns kvar.
Stugan låg bara några meter från gamla landsvägen och detta var kanske anledningen till, att man hyste in bönder, som fraktade gods längre sträckor med häst och släde.
Gårdsstallet finns fortfarande kvar med två spiltor och små blyfönster. Forstallet, gäststallet, var inrättat i utrymmet söder om vedboden.
Godset, fororna, kunde bestå av varor som salt, sill, kvarnstenar eller annat, som inte fanns naturligt så långt in i landet. Åkarna eller forbönderna, som de kallades, utnyttjade vinterväglaget. Snön gjorde det lättare att ta sig fram i kuperad terräng.
De här människorna måste ha känt till både nyheter och skvaller, som de snappat upp under resans gång. Det var säkert spännande för både små som stora att sitta där i mörkret och lyssna på samtalen som de förde, medan de småpysslade med någon nyttighet. Man skulle alltid ha något för handen och inte kasta bort tiden. Det gällde bara, att det fanns tillräckligt mycket hö och kanske lite extra mat i gården.
Det var trångt i stugan. Karlarna fick sova på golvet, men den öppna spisen värmde gott.
Inne var det mörkt och skumt. Man lär ha haft ett enda fönster och det är måhända det, som finns kvar i lidret på gården. Det var kallt vintertid och glasen i rutorna frostade igen i de mest fantastiska rosmönster. Maria och hennes tre syskon ristade bilder med naglarna på rimfrosten. Det finns inget ont, som inte har något gott med sig. Man använde sig av det som fanns, men till jularna klippte man siluetter i silkespapper för att dekorera hemmet.
1. COTTAGE BY THE CREEK
Maria’s childhood home was a simple cottage. The outline of the foundation can still be seen, even though, with-the-turn-of-the-century, her brother Per planted an orchard where the first cottage was built in the 1830’s. On the spot where the foundation stood, he planted grapes and gooseberry bushes. On the gable side of the house, by Bogg Brook, formerly Gåsvarvs Brook, were apple and cherry trees. Among these was dug out a half circle flower garden with Cowslips and Grape Hyacinths, varieties which are still found there.
The cottage lay a few meters from the old highway and it was probably for that reason they took in workmen, who hauled goods over long stretches with horse and sled. The farm stable still remains with two stalls and small lead windows. The front stall and guest stall were set up in the area south of the wood shed.
The goods that were transported could consist of items such as salt, herring, mill stones or other things which were not common so far inland. The travelers, or transport workers, which they were called, took advantage
of the winter roads. The snow made it easier to travel over the rutted terrain.
These travelers were acquainted with news and gossip which they picked up under the trips progress. It was surely exciting for both the young and old to sit there in the dark while they fiddled with small tasks and listen to the tales the travelers told - one must always have something in hand with which to pass time. It was crowded in the cottage. The men slept on the floor, but the open stove provided comforting warmth. Adequate hay and perhaps a little extra food were required on the farm to care for the travelers.
In side it was dark and stuffy. There was probably only one window and it is possibly the one which remains today in the shed on the farm. It was cold in the wintertime and the glass in the window of the cottage frosted over in the most fantastic rose patterns. Maria and her three siblings scraped pictures on the hoarfrost with their fingernails.
A person used that which was available, but for Christmas, silhouettes in tissue paper were made to decorate the home.
There is nothing bad that doesn’t have something good with it.
